Central Administration of The University of Cambridge
Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor:
The Chancellor of the university is Duke of Edinburgh and the Vice-Chancellor Leszek Borysiewicz . While the Chancellor has assigned a position in life, mostly ceremonial, the Vice-Chancellor is the one who takes care of the government and control of the university.
Senate House and Regent House:
The University Senate consists of all those who have obtained a Master of Arts degree from Cambridge, will meet in the Senate House, where they are also given all undergraduate degrees to students. The Senate elects the Chancellor and other prominent members of the administration, until 1950 elected two members of the House of Commons . The Regent House is rather the governing body in charge of making decisions and establish rules through a democratic voting system.
Finance:
It is estimated that in 2006 the total wealth of the university was around £ 4.1 billion (8.2 billion dollars), of which £ 1.2 billion of central property of the university and the remaining £ 2.9 billion distributed among 31 colleges.
It is remarkable that the universities and colleges have as a main source of money made available by the British government in the form of grants for research, given that Cambridge is in effect a public university. It is estimated that donations from individuals to reach 6% of the total wealth.
Museums and libraries:
The university has more than 100 libraries and numerous museums. The Central Library is the Cambridge University Library : As a legal deposit retains all books published in the United Kingdom. Many departments have specialized libraries, where books are free consultation for students.
Each college has its own library which also serves as a place of study, some very valuable manuscripts and antique store, like the Parker Library at Corpus Christi College, which has a collection of books dating back to early medieval Europe. [11]
Among the museums remarkable Fitzwilliam , which exhibits works by artists such as Titian , William Blake , and Alfred Sisley . The university is also equipped with a botanical garden , created in 1831.
The university also owns the Cambridge University Press , one of the oldest and largest publishing houses in the world. [12]
