A recent survey by the Foundation “Rodolfo De Benedetti” on a sample of 30,000 graduates has shed light on the degrees to which Italy not only guarantee to find a job more quickly, but also guarantee the highest salary. The research was carried out by Dr. Giovanni Peri (an economist and researcher at the University of California) and Massimo Rings, but will be officially presented at Bocconi University in Milan on December 11.

The survey revealed an interesting and unexpected: in fact, the highest-paid university degree is not (as many believe) that in medicine, but rather those in Economics and Engineering! The research also found that, beyond the “popular belief”, women do not always earn less than men (for a given course of study), and that the graduation grade is sometimes decisive. So would Economics and Engineering is the best option that allows you to get a job with more pay and more quickly. Afterwards, one of the most profitable degrees there would be medicine, mathematics and physics. On the contrary, the worst paid and with few job opportunities, would all those related to the humanities.

To understand the gap between the former and the latter, after five years the average salary for a graduate in Economics can exceed 10,000 Euros to a degree in the humanities !! And after 15 years, the gap could reach up to more than 25,000 Euros. The survey also highlighted as economics and engineering degrees would also offer prospects more equal between men and women, with a smaller difference in earnings between men and women (from 2,400 to 3,500 euros per year) than that found, for example, among graduates in Law, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences (ranging between 5,900 and 7,300 instead euros). Although, in spite of more and more girls enroll at the university, research has found that this figure does not grow in proportion to the wages of women and the gender gap is still very high.

One last interesting fact that emerges from the research is that the degree grade , as opposed to how often you think, can be crucial to find gainful employment. At that point, with the same educational qualification, a graduate with honors can earn up to 50% more . A fact that, for some, may indicate that the Italian university system works and that universities do their jobs well. You like this?
