History

The university as it exists today was created by law Buckman (Buckman Act) June 5, 1905. The law cut the funding of four existing institutions to group them under state control and make the University of the State of Florida (University of the State of Florida). On 6 July, the city of Gainesville was chosen as the site of the future campus, and classes began on September 26 of that year.

In 1935 it was decided that the date of creation of the University was in 1853, founding date of the oldest of the four institutions which it came from (the East Florida Seminary).
The University of Florida was established as the only public school in Florida, restricted to males and is forbidden to people of color. The school was open to young women in 1947, and African Americans in 1958. The same year, the School of Medicine and Shands Hospital were established. In 1985, the University integrated the Association of American Universities (Association of American Universities, AAU), a prestigious organization of secondary education which includes the 62 best schools in the United States, private and public combined.
