The University of Chicago (in English , The University of Chicago) is a university private American , located in the neighborhood of Hyde Park in Chicago .
It was founded in 1890 by the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller and began his first class on 1 October 1892 . It was one of the first American universities designed as a combination of the American formula of the University of Liberal Arts and the formula of the German research university.
Affiliated with 85 winners of the Nobel Prize , the University of Chicago is currently considered one of the best research institutions in the world. Historically, the university is renowned for its unique program of studies for power plants and other innovations initiated by Robert Maynard Hutchins in the 1930s (including the academic calendar based on the quarter), and for influential academic movements such as the Chicago School in the economy , the Chicago school in sociology , for his literary criticism , and the movement of law and economics in legal analysis. It is ranked 9th in the world ranking of universities established by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University and 7th in the world ranking published by the Times Higher Education in 2009.

It was the site of the first nuclear reaction controlled, conducted December 2nd 1942 under the direction of Enrico Fermi .
