Queen’s University Belfast was founded by Queen Victoria as an alternative to Trinity College Dublin, controlled by the Anglican Church. It was the first university in Northern Ireland.Initially the center was known as Queen’s College, Belfast and in 1945 was associated with other Colleges (Queen’s College, Cork and Queen’s College, Galway ) as part of Queen’s University of Ireland. The objective of this institution was to promote higher education in the Catholic and Presbyterian. In 1849 he founded Queen’s College, Belfast. In 1879 it was renamed and called Royal University of Ireland.
In 1908 thanks to the Irish Universities Act (Irish Universities Act, 1980, dissolved the Royal University of Ireland and formed two different universities: National University of Ireland and the Queen’s University of Belfast. It grew up as an independent institution that imparted knowledge of Arts, Sciences, Law, Medicine, which were joining other subjects such as Commerce, Applied Science and Technology, Agriculture and Theology.
It was one of eight higher education institutions represented in the UK Parliament at Westminster until 1950 when such representation was abolished. Today the campus is located near the center of the city of Belfast and has two colleges partners: St Mary’s and Stranmillis (both Belfast).
English Courses:
The university has an excellent service teaching English, Espanol Language Unit (ELU). Different levels, modalities (oral, written …) and various language skills can be learned especially in the summer courses. For foreign students there are introductory courses that last between three, six or twelve weeks. They are oriented courses who want to perfect the language before school starts to follow them without any problem.
There is another course, Pre-University course, which runs throughout the academic period and is designed to help students find an appropriate language level. The modality of choice for foreign students are the classes, in-sessional language courses, two hours a week, taught for a semester. Each student will perform a test at the beginning of the course in order to place it in a class according to their level of English.
