University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL, pronounced “uhm-suhl”) is one of four universities in the University of Missouri system. Established in 1963, is the newest university in the UM system. As of 2005, is the largest university by enrollment in the St. Louis area. UMSL’s campus is located in the above arguments the Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis County. Additional facilities are located on the former site of University of Marillac.
Bachelor, Master and doctoral programs are offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business Administration from the College of Education, College of Arts and fine communication, the College of Nursing, and College of Optometry. The business school is accredited AACSB, and is the only university in the St. Louis area, who are also AACSB accredited accounting. Preprofessional, a joint program of engineering with Washington University in St. Louis, and evening programs are also offered. UMSL is home to the optometry school, providing students a PhD. Only 17 optometry schools exist throughout North America including Puerto Rico. Pierre Laclede university honors program is the UMSL honors.
The University libraries:
Library of Thomas Jefferson which is the main university library, Room E. Barnes Library which houses materials of importance to nursing, education and optometry programs, and St. Louis Mercantile Library which was founded in 1846 and is the oldest library west of the Mississippi River. The campus contains two stops on MetroLink, St. Louis regional light rail system. A student center, academic buildings, parking structures, the performing arts centers, and residential housing has been built over the past ten years as part of campus improvement programs. UMSL is sometimes confused with Saint Louis University (SLU, pronounced “swamp”), but they are separate institutions. UMSL is a public university, while SLU is a private Jesuit university. The university has an agreement of the dual-registration with the Gulf University for Science and Technology, Kuwait.
Campus:
The campus is divided into two parts, a North Campus and South Campus. UMSL can be visited using St. Louis MetroLink light rail system has two stations on campus: UMSL North and South UMSL. Some of the buildings, libraries, and centers on campus are Thomas Jefferson Library, Library merchant at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, The Center for Transportation Studies, the apartments of the meadows of the university, the Millennium Student Center, residential life and housing, Clark Hall, Lucas Hall, Touhill Performing Arts Center, CCB/SSB, and E. Hall Barnes Library.
Student Association:
Association of UMSL Student Government (SGA) is a student performance that the government set up to provide a voice for students to deal with the administration of the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). SGA has three parts, the executive branch, the assembly and the court of the student, and is governed by a constitution approved broad student. SGA was started in 1963 when the university was founded and has gone through many constitutional changes, the latest in 2004. SGA includes members from each student organization and university students from each campus. The government joined the graduate student in the student body. SGA has been instrumental in changes for students around the campus. Is responsible for approving student fees before they go to the board of guardians of the University of Missouri System and divides out fees to fund campus activity budgets of student organizations.
