University of Tulsa is a private university awarding bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is currently ranked 91st among doctoral degree granting universities in the nation by U.S. News and World Report and is listed as one of the “366 best universities” by Princeton Review. The university is historically affiliated with Presbyterian Church USA.
History:
The University of Tulsa was founded in Muskogee, Oklahoma, as the Presbyterian School for Indian girls in 1882 under the leadership of Alice Mary Robertson, but was re-loaded as Henry Kendall College in 1894 under the auspices of the board of Presbyterian Women home missions. In 1907 the college moved to its current site in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A university was formed in 1920 when the university merged with proposal McFarlin University to the University of Tulsa.
Campus:
The campus of the University of Tulsa focuses on a wide, grassy quad-like area known as “the U.” the predominant architectural style is English Gothic. Most buildings are constructed so and garden crab rose-colored sandstone of Tennessee interspersed with stone brought in Arkansas. Other materials include Bedford limestone of Indiana and board taken in Vermont.
Bayless Plaza:
Completed in 2006, Bayless Plaza contains Kendall Bell, which hung from the dome of Kendall Hall before its destruction. The square lies directly south of Tyrrell Hall, longtime home of the School of Music, and serves as the apex of Tucker Drive, the main entrance of the university.
Library:
At the top of U feel a notable signal of the campus, McFarlin Library, which is named after Robert and Ida McFarlin, the primary benefactors of the library. The ceremonies took place broke ground on May 3, 1929 and the building was dedicated on June 1, 1930. The library continued to grow over the years, adding two additions to the five-story before 1979. Currently, the library houses over three million items and is noted for its collections of twentieth-century British, Irish and American Literature, including the collection’s second largest in the world of materials near James Joyce.
It also contains the papers of Nobel Prize winner VS Naipaul. The library also contains an extensive collection of books on Native American history.Renovations began in the spring of 2007 in the 12,000 square foot additions to consolidate computing resources and technology library in a location. The reading rooms of the library will also be restored to provide the areas reserved for the study of student and faculty. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2009.
